John - drums

John grew up learning piano, before joining his school orchestra playing Tympani and percussion. Frustrated by the fixed structure of classical music, he formed a 7 piece Swing band performing material from the 40’s and 50’s to adoring senior citizens. Three years later, at the age of 16, he joined a band playing covers of 60's and 70’s music and met Mark, who was to become a regular playing partner for the next 3 decades.

Following spells working with many different people, in 1979 he was invited to audition for a London based band with expectations of an imminent record deal. Two years of slogging around the London pub and club scene alongside some memorable names from that period was great fun, but failed to be the path to fame and fortune as hoped.

Moving back to Cambridge, he continued working in bands – occasionally joining up with Mark and playing many diverse styles. Other work included a spell as demonstrator for MPC Drums, showing off their products at trade shows, a position later taken over by Mel Gaynor of Simple Minds.

The late 1980’s saw the first fill in job with the backing band for British County music singer Budgie Coleman. In 1991, he joined full time and is currently in his 21st year touring and recording as resident drummer.

Never content playing a single style of music and despite the full time band, John still finds time to fill in for other bands and after a gig with Rendition, the offer to join full time and the chance to team up with Mark once again, along with Carla, Dan and Nick, was an opportunity to good to miss.
